Day of Silence
The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transexual) Alliance is sponsoring their annual Day of Silence on April 25 this year.
I abhor any ill treatment of any human being--except for those who have given up their rights by taking innocent life. I'd be curious to see what kind of attention any other group would get for sponsoring a Day of Silence for the unborn children who never get a chance to speak up for themselves. And, how about a Day of Silence for the countless numbers of women who suffer through physical abuse and even 'honor' killings under sharia law.
My guess is that both possibilities would be run out of the schools. One would be accused of shoving religion down the throats of students; the other would be labeled Islamophobic.

What about Free Speech?!
Where are all the free speech advocates right now? Does Salman Rushdie not count?
Oscar Night Show: Celebrities and Young Girls
KERN's Inga Barks joined me to discuss the impact of people like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears on young girls. It got a little controversial along the way. Don't miss it.
How About the 3 Rs...and being American?
It used to be that the purpose of public education had some relationship to teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.
A Self-Awareness Crisis?
I have to confess that I am one of the millions of American Idol viewers. Of course, I'm watching for purely sociological reasons--to study the culture. Yeah, right!
12-year olds and STDs?
Assemblywoman Sally Lieber has proposed a mandated vaccination for the HPV virus, which can only be contracted sexually, for girls entering the 6th grade. You read it right, SIXTH GRADE!

On October (and November) Surprises: Ted Haggard
The latest election-eve political dirty trick--the accusation that pastor Ted Haggard, head of the National Association of Evangelicals, has been soliciting gay sex for the last three years--appears to be an incredibly desperate attempt to push an agenda.
While Haggard has admitted to "some" of the accusations are true, I do not believe the gay sex allegation. A voicemail recording indicates he may have been purchasing drugs from the accuser. However, if it turns out that it is all true and another great leader has fallen, that reality would have no bearing on the veracity of the traditional (one male, one female) definition of marriage. Why should one man's failings alter the way we view marriage?
When Republican Representative Mark Foley (Florida) was discovered to have initiated sexual instant messages and emails with Congressional pages, there were no Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) attempting to justify pedophilia as a result. Incidentally, he resigned and his behavior was immediately and appropriately condemned by his own party leaders.
Senator John Kerry spoke at Pasadena City College this week and implied that the men and women of our armed forces are uneducated and "stuck in Iraq." When he eventually offered his non-apology apology, no one made any attempt to support or justify his claim about any of our troops being somehow uneducated. In reality, a Heritage Foundation report reveals that our brave men and women are of the most educated and successful Americans. The debate centered around Kerry, his comment and its place in the context of Kerry's pattern of anti-war, anti-military speak. The only evaluation of the troops--throughout the political spectrum--was that which validated our men and women in uniform.
I say all this to say that it is absurd to challenge the obvious biological, societal, moral, economic benefits of the historically established definition of marriage as that which is between one man and one woman. In every state where this measure has been placed on a ballot, traditional marriage has won big.
What we're seeing in Colorado right now is the case of one man who, thankfully, appears to be seeking help for some error and failure. It is no cause to re-evaluate the supposed validity of redefining very the foundation on which society rests.
